Project
Hard Hat is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization that promotes the
practice of safer sex among gay and bisexual men by way of providing
educational information, S.T.D. testing information and locations,
support group information and by distributing condoms free of charge to
dispensers within bars, night clubs and other venues which cater to our
target population. We believe that keeping the A.I.D.S. pandemic in the
forefront of people's minds will encourage them to make more informed
decisions, behave more responsibly and be proactive in preventing the
spread of H.I.V. and other sexually transmitted diseases.
Q & A Why do you do this?
The volunteers of Project Hard Hat work to spread the word and practices of safer sex for different reasons. First, there was a need for a prevention organization in the Phoenix Area after the demise of Project Lifeguard. Second, many of us (and you too!) know people who have contracted H.I.V. and want to stop the spread of A.I.D.S. Third, we believe this is a valuable way to serve our community.
Do you get paid for doing this? No. None of our members get paid for working for PHH and we use our own money for the gasoline to deliver condoms.
Are the condoms you distribute donated to Project Hard Hat? Rarely. Project Hard Hat pays for more than 99% of the condoms we distribute.
Why don't you provide female condoms? We do. They can be found at Z Girl Club. Female condoms are far more expensive than male condoms. You will have to ask the bartender for them.
Why are the dispensers sometimes empty? We try to keep all of our dispensers full of condoms but there is a shortage of volunteer help and some locations need to be restocked more than once a week. For example, Charlie's alone uses 1000 condoms per week!
